Barbering Essentials: Setting Up a Professional Station

Sep 30, 2026

Whether you are setting up a chair at home or kitting out a new barbering station, the difference between a frustrating cut and a clean one usually comes down to preparation, not talent. Here is what our trade customers keep on hand.

Cutting tools

  • A clipper for bulk removal and fading. Cordless models with a lithium battery give you the freedom to move around the head without dragging a cord.
  • A trimmer or detailer for edges, line-ups and beard work. A trimmer with a narrow blade is far easier to control on the neckline than a full-size clipper.
  • A foil shaver if you finish skin fades or shave the head. Foil shavers cut closer than a clipper with no guard.

Guards, blades and combs

Keep a full guard set and check them for cracks regularly — a damaged guard is the fastest way to an uneven fade. Have spare blades on hand and replace them on a schedule rather than when they start pulling. Cutting combs and barber combs should be replaced when teeth become rough.

Hygiene and client comfort

  • Spray or wipe clipper blades between clients, and oil them at the end of the day.
  • Use a fresh neck strip and clean cape for every client.
  • Dispose of blades and razors safely.
  • Sanitise combs, brushes and scissors in an appropriate solution, not just water.

We stock capes, neck strips and accessories to keep this side of the station running.

Finishing products

A small, well-chosen shelf beats a wall of bottles. Most stations need:

  • Styling powder for instant volume and grip at the root.
  • Matte clay or paste for texture and a natural finish.
  • Pomade or gel for a slick, high-shine look.
  • Sea salt spray for a matte, beachy finish on longer styles.
  • Beard oil or balm if you offer beard services.
